Metro Bank to launch drive-through branch

Facilities for withdrawals, deposits and an ATM will offer 'new level of convenience for customers'

Direct debits are about to join Krispy Kremes and french fries on the list of things you can get without leaving your car with the launch of the UK's only drive-through bank.

In May, Metro Bank will launch a drive-through service in Slough, offering customers the chance to withdraw and deposit money and undertake other day-to-day transactions from the comfort of their vehicle. One lane will offer an ATM and deposit point, while the other has a counter, which will be staffed throughout the bank's opening hours.

Metro bank, which launched in the UK in 2010 and now operates in 17 locations, will run the service alongside a standard branch. A spokeswoman said the location next to a busy dual carriageway was likely to make it popular among motorists and that other sites would follow.

Craig Donaldson, chief executive officer of Metro Bank, said the bank would "bring a whole new level of convenience to customers".

"We're very excited to bring our first-ever drive-through to Slough," he said. "Our job is to make banking easy for everyone and we're confident that with the drive-through lanes, combined with the great in-store customer-focused services that we offer, we will achieve it."

Drive-through banking is popular in the US, particularly with business customers, but has never gained traction in the UK. The private Martin's Bank opened a drive-through service in Leicester in 1959, following that with a second branch in Epsom seven years later, and Barclays, which eventually bought it, launched a drive-through cash machine at Hatton Cross, near Heathrow airport, in 1998.

HSBC also announced plans to open drive-through branches in 2007, but did not proceed with it, and the other drive-throughs have close.

Metro Bank has offers seven-day branch services, on-the-spot debit card issuing and even dog bowls and biscuits for customer's pets.
